The low-cost airline AirAsia has officially announced its entry into the ride-hailing market in Bangkok. This move of AirAsia is to anticipate the demand for travel when tourism reopens. Since May 31, 2022, AirAsia Ride service has started operating in the Thai capital with 3,000 drivers. The low-cost airline also plans to attract more drivers. After Bangkok, this airline also aims to develop this service in Phuket and Chiang Mai to serve the needs of international guests.
After 2 years of being severely affected by the pandemic, AirAsia has continuously managed to survive. It further developed fintech and ride-hailing technology. Since August 2021, AirAsia has started to provide ride-hailing service in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is looking forward to the tourism recovery in the summer to deliver the super apps from ride-hailing to flight booking. However, this airline also has to compete with other big players in Thailand such as Grab or Bolt Technology.

“Entering the ride-hailing market is not an easy task for AirAsia as they will have to spend a lot of money to attract drivers. I think consumers in Southeast Asia are still not loyal to existing platforms. They can easily change the using platforms due to the promotions,” said analysis specialist Nathan Naidu. The value of the online ride-hailing and food delivery market in Southeast Asia is expected to be three times more than $42 billion in 2025. In 2021, the market was already worth about $13 billion.
